Historic Grand Canyon Ranch

This Historic Arizona Guest Ranch Has An Exciting and Colorful History

The original headquarters of this Arizona guest ranch is located next to Diamond Bar Springs, known to Native Americans for the last 3,600 years. The oldest inhabitants at the springs were the Cohina Indians, whose roasting pits have been carbon dated back to circa 1600 B.C. The Indians called the springs “Tanyika Springs.” Around 1860, after the Hualapai Indian War, gold miners built a Stamp Mill to crush ore for the King Tut Gold Mine. From the 1870’s onwards, the Mormons used the springs as a resting and watering place for their wagon trains. In May 1889, the Hualapai Indian Tribe’s first Ghost Dance ritual was held at the Springs. In 1904 the famous gunfighter and cattle rancher, “Tap” Duncan, purchased the ranch to escape from his previous “profession.” He became one of the most widely respected pioneer cattlemen. From 1915 onwards, an unknown cowboy called Bruce Kisskadon worked for Tap. He wrote about the ranch and in doing so started “Cowboy Poetry.” The famous Western author Louis L’Amour also worked for Tap, and later claimed the ex-gunfighter taught him everything he knew about ranching and buckarooin.’

Preserving The Grand Canyon

Ranching and Nature Working Together at this Working Cattle Ranch

Strong environmentalists, the owner and staff of Grand Canyon Ranch only raise Corriente cattle, which are free to roam over 165 square miles (165 sq. mi.) of mountainous terrain. The hardy Corriente can be traced back to the first cattle brought to the new world by the Spanish as early as 1493. The policy of our working dude ranch is to protect and preserve the wild animals and plants that are indigenous to this beautiful southwest region of the United States. Monitoring water resources and protecting this unique and fragile desert habitat are important to us, and we work closely with the Arizona Department of Game and Fish and the Bureau of Land Management.
